I want to visit a friend who lives in downtown Toronto but the airfare is ~$650, how do i find a cheaper way?

I live in Vancouver and going to Toronto is more expensive than going to London. How should my friends and I go visit Toronto? We are definitely not paying 650 (and this is during the Summer; planning now)
